EU Affairs Committee to resume discussion on CETA

1st June

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss the Comprehensive Trade and Economic Agreement (CETA) with the European Commission’s Acting Deputy Director General of DG Trade, Rupert Schlegelmilch at a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 2 June at 9.30am.

Mr Schlegelmilch will appear virtually before the Committee for the meeting in Leinster House.

Speaking before the meeting, Cathaoirleach of the Committee on EU Affairs, Joe McHugh TD said: “The Committee welcomes this engagement with Mr Schlegelmilch to further examine the trade deal between the EU and Canada. Mr Schlegelmilch is in a unique position to give insight into CETA as he has responsibility on the EU side for implementing certain aspects of the agreement. Mr Schlegelmilch is co-chair of the CETA Regulatory Cooperation Forum which facilitates and promotes regulatory co-operation between the EU and Canada.

“We also welcome this opportunity to explore further the history behind the proposed agreement, the trade benefits to date and the Investment Court System (ICS).”

CETA has been provisionally applied since September 2017 but has yet to be formally ratified by Ireland. The meeting is the fifth engagement the Committee has held examining the deal.
